At Lindsay Ultrasound & X-ray, we do our utmost to ensure that your examination is performed in a timely manner. Occasionally an emergency may interrupt our appointment schedule. These types of emergencies are beyond our control and we have to prioritize when a critically ill patient needs attention.
Generally, X-ray examinations require no special preparations. Should any be required, we will contact and inform you.
X-rays today are considered to be safe due to the small doses of radiation required. Over your lifetime, the danger from radiation exposure is minimal. If you are female and may be pregnant, please inform the technologist prior to your X-ray commencing.
Do not consume any food or liquid 6 hours prior to your appointment. If you have an appointment scheduled for later in the day, you may eat a small amount of toast or drink a black coffee before 9 AM. It is important to arrive at the clinic with an empty stomach. If you are required to take medicine, a small amount of water is allowed. If you are a Diabetic, please consult with your doctor prior to fasting for the exam.
A standard abdominal ultrasound exam will focus on the organs in the abdominal region. The scan will focus on both areas where issues are and are not, to ensure a complete examination.
An X-ray provides a poor image of the organs in the abdomen. An Ultrasound not only produces more accurate results, but no radiation is used.

A full bladder is needed to obtain a quality image from your Ultrasound. If your bladder is empty, the pelvic organs are difficult to view clearly.
There are different types if Pelvic Ultrasounds but they all normally begin with a standard type where a trans-abdominal probe is used to scan the pelvis region. For women, a trans-vaginal exam may be required. This type of exam is used to clarify results found during the standard exam. A technologist will speak to you should feel you may benefit from this type of exam.

You can ask the technologist during your examination but it’s not always possible to find the sex of a baby. There are a few factors that determine this such as the baby’s position, the age of the pregnancy, and certain patients scan better than others.
Having your family around during what is an examination that requires concentration, can be a distraction to the technologist . Once the examination is complete, the technologist will bring your family and friends in.
